Welcome to LYR 100: Introduction to Lyricology.

Firstly, LYR 100 is a preliminary course at ReHearsal House for students of lyricology, composition, and recording artistry.

It is important to understand that for a recording artist, especially when considering the economic or business side of a music career, lyric knowledge is essential. Whether you have someone writing lyrics for you or you intend to write your own original lyrics, having a solid foundation in lyricology is very important.

Lyricology is the study of lyrics. However, in our context, it does not only refer to finished lyrics. It also includes the study of lyric writing itself. In other words, how does one become a professional writer of song lyrics?

Lyrics simply refer to the words of a song. A key question we ask in this course is whether lyric writing comes innately or instinctively, or whether there are guided principles that can help someone establish themselves professionally as a lyricist or lyrics writer.

Now, lyrics writing must be clearly differentiated in our context. Remember that ART (Recording Artistry) is a vocational music education. This means music is taught in a way that connects directly to its practical relevance in day-to-day business within the music industry.

So, how does lyrics writing differ from songwriting?

Songwriting includes both lyricology and composition—that is, the lyrics and the melody or tune together. Lyricology, on the other hand, focuses strictly on the words of the song.

Having established this, the first part of our lesson—Lesson One—is titled “What Is Lyricology?”. In the next series, we will continue to explore this topic in detail.
