About Childhood Musicals Education

Childhood Musicals is ReHearsal House's progressive music education pathway for children and teenagers. It is designed to introduce children to music at an early age and guide them through a structured journey of musical discovery, foundational musicianship, instrumental development, and responsible musical expression.
We believe that every child deserves access to meaningful music education—not merely as an extracurricular activity, but as an important part of learning, personal development, creativity, and cultural life.
Our Story: From Educational Research to Musical Formation
Since 2004, ReHearsal House has been involved in educational research programmes and projects for children, covering subjects and activities ranging from Mathematics and the Sciences to Drama, Choreography, Games, and Music.
In 2008, we began developing structured music education programmes and curricula. This work contributed to the establishment of our College of Applied Music and the development of curriculum-based musical education programmes for kindergarten, primary, and secondary school learners.
Our present programmes have grown out of years of practical teaching, educational experimentation, curriculum development, and experience working with both children and adults.
These experiences have helped shape the programme structures, teaching methods, learning resources, and departmental pathways that form part of the ReHearsal House educational ecosystem today.
Childhood Musicals represents our continuing commitment to giving children a purposeful, progressive, and well-structured foundation in music.
A Progressive Approach to Music Education
Children do not all learn at the same pace, and musical development requires more than learning to play an instrument. Our approach combines age-appropriate instruction with the gradual development of essential musical skills.
Depending on the learner's stage and programme, musical education may include:
- Listening and Ear Training: Developing attentive listening, pitch recognition, and the ability to identify and understand musical sounds.
- Rhythm and Coordination: Exploring pulse, rhythmic patterns, coordination, and increasingly complex rhythmic activities.
- Solfege and Sight-Reading: Developing the foundations for understanding, reading, and expressing music.
- Instrumental Development: Building practical skills through appropriate instruments, repertoire, technique, and guided performance.
- Musical Understanding: Introducing learners to the relationships between sounds, patterns, musical structures, and expression.
- Performance and Responsible Musicianship: Encouraging preparation, discipline, confidence, collaboration, and thoughtful participation in musical activities.
Piano serves as an important foundational instrument within our children's music education approach, while other instruments and musical activities are introduced according to the learner's stage, programme, and suitability.
Our aim is not simply to produce children who can play an instrument. We seek to nurture learners who listen attentively, understand what they hear, develop practical musical skills, and grow into responsible musicians.
Our Childhood Musicals Pathway
Childhood Musicals is organised into progressive stages that accommodate different ages and levels of development.
1. Pre-School Musicals
An introduction to musical experiences and foundational learning for young children. Activities are adapted to the learner's developmental stage, with an emphasis on listening, rhythm, musical interaction, and early musical awareness.
2. Kindergarten Musicals
A structured introduction to musicianship for young learners, combining foundational musical concepts with age-appropriate practical activities and instrumental development.
3. Grade School Musicals
A progressive programme for school-age learners, building musical understanding, instrumental competence, reading skills, listening ability, and performance experience through structured levels.
4. High School Musicals
A more advanced stage of childhood and adolescent musical development, supporting increasingly independent musicianship, focused instrumental study, and preparation for further vocational music education.
Learners progress according to the requirements of their programme and demonstrated readiness. Age provides a useful guide for placement, but individual assessment may also be necessary.

Instruments and Musical Specialisations
Our programmes provide opportunities for learners to explore instruments and develop practical musical skills. Depending on the programme, level, and availability, these may include:

Childhood Musicals is part of the wider ReHearsal House educational pathway. As learners mature and develop the required skills, they may progress towards more advanced vocational music education through College Musicals and the House Institute of Vocational Musicianship.
Progression is guided by the learner's preparation, demonstrated competence, and programme requirements.
