Session 1: What Are Techniques?

SO WHAT ARE TECHNIQUES?

Ever heard a violinist play a note and then release the note with a "bing" effect? Or a guitarist play a note and sort of slides down the fret board or a keyboardist bending a note back and forth -All these you notice simply introduces- Adds a certain beauty (grace) or charm to the entire musical phrase- whether it is the "pull-off" bing, or the hammer on slide or the pitch bend- all these add-on effects,  brought in for the purposes of extra beautification- called ornamentations in music is basically what defines musical techniques.

However just like in real life, a beautiful woman without discretion is as gold ring in a pig's snout (Prov. 11:22); so is musical ornamentations without musical character! Many beginner musicians without having developed musical character are so passionately pursuing techniques and technique artistry, the result most of the time is music without musical soul, notes without language! The listener only hears the sound, they never "feel" the music! So the beginning/starting point is musical character- in our next series on techniques we shall be looking at the subject of musical character.
