WHY APPLIED MUSIC?
WHY
APPLIED MUSIC…?
Discipline is said to be the most valuable result of all
Education; that is, to make one do what he ought to do and when it ought to be
done, whether they like it or not. Educators argue that this should be the
first lesson that ought to be learnt but that however early a man’s training
begins in life, it is this lesson that he learns last thoroughly. This means,
one has not truly been thoroughly educated until they learn discipline! Yet
discipline is a life-long process, which can only be ensured by its twin
character: resilience!
Research has shown that of all earthly subjects (studies),
applied music has the greatest potential to instill and develop both discipline
and resilience. Applied Music is not theory of Music, the Theory of Music is
concerned with the acquisition of knowledge (information) of the Art; Applied
Music on the other hand, is concerned with skillful practice translating
knowledge into experience (wisdom) of the Art; thus wisdom to bring every word
of theory into imaginative creativity- The Art of Musical Performance!
A true Educational curriculum should not imprison the mind,
but rather feed it and fuel the imaginative creativity thereof! Thus the
highest form of discipline to be got from music must be sought from a
‘discipline-oriented’ applied musical curriculum, whose driving force and goal
is to fuel the imaginative creativity of the mind, allowing it to blossom, thus
becoming all that God would have it become. It is to this end, that we have
designed the Applied Musical Program.
